WORKSHOP - Tell Your Immigrant Family Story Through an Heirloom Mini Art Quilt

WORKSHOP - Tell Your Immigrant Family Story Through an Heirloom Mini Art Quilt

Learn how to create a one-of-a-kind mini art quilt (10-inch x 10-inch) to represent your family history. Leslie Marsh, a renowned artist from North Carolina, will guide us through the process.  No previous experience is necessary.

About the project:  We hope this will be a group project involving your whole family.  This is a chance to share family stories as you work on your art quilt together. You may want to:

  • include photos of family members printed on fabric (the library will help you get that done).
  • attach small objects to recall special moments, such as a tiny vial of spices or dry fragrances that are meaningful to you.
  • or make a cloth pocket on your mini quilt to hold a small homemade book of photos or pieces of letters exchanged between family members.

This workshop is most suitable for adults who can then guide other family members in the project.

No previous sewing skills are required and is intended to be done without a sewing machine.

There will be an opportunity to include your mini quilt in a larger tapestry to be hung in the Newark Library or to have a copy of your piece included in the tapestry.

This workshop is made possible by a grant from California Humanities in association with National Endowment for Humanities.  https://calhum.org/
