Archimedes Week 5 and 6—Applied Problem Solving to IRL Challenges

Archimedes Week 5 and 6—Applied Problem Solving to IRL Challenges

This summer, the Alameda County Library offering a series of classes focusing on solving real-world problems using 2D, 3D design and wearable electronics.  In addition to the technical skills, these classes will emphasize the creative problem-solving and lifelong learning skills that Fremont advanced manufacturing employers are requesting.  The classes build towards two final week-long classes working with companies and nonprofits to solve real-world challenges they are facing.

In weeks five and six, students will apply all of the skills learned in the previous weeks and use the library design thinking framework to solve a challenge presented by local organization.   These are real-world challenges that companies and nonprofits in Fremont are facing. These can include:

  • Designing a residential and light industrial solar system
  • Designing a 3D printed orthopedic biomedical device
  • Designing a hands-on exhibit for kids to explore air and water flows
  • Designing a branding/signage system for a new company

Students will create digital, then physical mockups for the challenges.  Representatives from the company will be available during the week to present challenges, provide guidance and provide feedback on the final result.

  • This session is two weeks long and meets Monday through Friday from 1 PM to 4 PM.
  • All high schoolers are welcome to participate in the class.
